Food security refers to the general availability, accessibility, and affordability of nutritious and safe foods in a community. It's a vital issue in low-income neighborhoods like Bayview Hunters Point where are the issues of access to food and lack of transportation: The absence of nearby supermarkets makes it more difficult to purchase nutritiousand affordable food, particularly fresh fruit and vegetables. And lack of community knowledge about nutrition and food preparation contributes to the cycle of food insecurity: Healthy diets are compromised, resulting in a prevalence of hunger, food insecurity, and obesity.
